Performance Evaluation of High Speed Rail in Shanghai Metropolitan Area from the Perspective of Urban Integration Base on Internet Map API

From the perspective of the urban integration effect of Shanghai and other cities in Yangtze River Delta, this paper evaluates the service performance of high speed rail (HSR) in Shanghai Metropolitan area of the Yangtze River Delta using Baidu map API.
First of all, from the perspective of Shanghai Metropolitan Area, the inter-city trips of urban integration with Shanghai are divided into two types: inter-city commuter travel and one-day round trip. Inter-city commuter travel reflects the functional linkage of urban integration between “residence and work” within other cities and Shanghai. Frequent one-day round trip travels reflect the urban integration functional linkage of "work-work" and "residence-recreation". According to the study, high frequency, day round trip and sensitivity to travel time are three characteristics of inter-city travel. So the improvement of HSR travel time for the above two type urban integration travels between other cities and Shanghai is taken as the standard to the performance evaluation of HSR system.
In this paper, the travel time is the total time from the departure to the destination, Baidu Map, one of web maps is used to get the relatively real travel time. Based on the related research, 90 minutes is determined as the longest travel time of inter-city commuter travel, and 180 minutes is determined as the longest travel time of one-day round trip. The total travel time without the HSR is the driving time from somewhere in the city to Shanghai, and the total time after the opening of the HSR is the driving time from the same departure to the high-speed railway station plus taking the HSR to the destination, so the changes of travel time can be obtained. Considering the difference of HSR time, this study takes the best situation, therefore, the total time of taking HSR is "driving to high-speed railway station + shortest train time + 30 minutes of two-stage arrival and departure time".
Subsequently, every city in Yangtze River Delta is divided into 500-meter-wide grids. According to the above method of calculation, the time changes before and after the opening of HSR in each grid are calculated by using the running schedule of HSR and the direction API, which is one of Baidu map API and can provide travel routes and time. Then the results of grids are summed up to the cities, improvement degree of travel time of each city and the scope affected by the HSR can be obtained. Hence, the performance of HSR can be evaluated by comparing the time change degree and impact areas of different cities.
It is found that the performance of HSR for cities near Shanghai is different from each other. For inter-city commuter travel, the performance of the HSR to the urban area of Suzhou and Wuxi is obviously improved, and the commuting time in Kunshan has also been optimized. For the one-day round trip, the performance of the HSR to Hangzhou and Nanjing is obviously improved. But for some cities such as Ningbo, Shaoxing and Huzhou,there is no significant changes in the travel times for the two type inter-city trips of urban integration with Shanghai.
Finally, it is concluded that the location of HSR stations, railway line length and operation speed affect the performance of HSR system in Yangtze River Delta from the perspective of urban integration with Shanghai.
