The effect of aging treatment on the damping capacity in Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy

The effect of aging treatment at the temperature ranging from 250 to 400 °C on the damping capacity in columnar-grained Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy and its mechanism were studied in this paper. The results show that with the increase of aging temperature and time, the bainite precipitated phase increases, but the damping capacity of columnar-grained Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy decreases first, then increases and finally decreases. When the volume fraction of bainite phase is between 0.5 and 0.75, the damping capacity is excellent and the damping coefficient tanΦ is above 0.08, which is twice more than that of the alloy before aging treatment. The interaction between the martensite interface motion and the bainite is consistent with the pinning and depinning mechanisms. When the pinning action of the bainite phase reaches a certain amount, with the increase of the strain, except for the energy dissipation of the martensitic transformation, the pinning and depinning of the martensite phase at the bainite phase produces additional energy dissipation, which increases the damping capacity of the alloy.
