In this work, a novel soap-film technique is developed to form gaseous interfaces with a well-characterized discontinuous configuration. Four single-mode and four quasi-single-mode air/SF6 interfaces with different amplitude and wavelength are successfully generated and their interactions with a planar shock are recorded by high-speed schlieren photography. The experimental results demonstrate a large elimination of the small-wavelength perturbations and the diffusion layer at the initial interfaces generated. Based on the high-fidelity results, a strong validation of the linear and nonlinear models is achieved by comparing the experimental amplitude variations with model predictions for the bubble and spike. Specifically, spectral analyses of the clear interfacial morphologies captured are applicable, which facilitates a detailed examination of the weakly nonlinear behavior of the single-mode RMI.
