Precise measurements on the elastic moduli and strength of optically opaque materials at extreme high P-T conditions are long-standing problems in the field of high-pressure physics and/or materials science. Nowadays, ultrasonic interferometry and Brillouin scattering spectroscopy have been mainly used to directly measure acoustic velocities and elasticity of materials at high pressure. When investigating the elastic moduli of metals/alloys or optically opaque materials under high pressure, the Brillouin spectroscopy technique has encountered great challenge. Using the state-of-the-art techniques of ultrasonic measurements in conjunction with synchrotron x-ray diffraction as well as x-radiographic imaging, here we will report the recent integrated ultrasonic and synchrotron studies to explore the structural stability/phase transitions, elastic moduli and strength of materials at extreme high-pressure and high-temperature. These results should be important for their technological and engineering applications in extreme environments.
