To study the effects of chunk mixing on the implosion performance, we performed the implosion experiments using the deuterated foam ball doped with gold grains on the SG-III prototype laser facility. The gold grains had mass fraction of 10% and diameter around 1um. They were uniformly distributed in the deuterated foam ball. We measured the neutron yield, the size and the emission intensity of the hotspot. When the gold grains were added in the deuterated foam, the neutron yield decreased from 1.1×106 to 1.75×105, the size of the hotspot was smaller, and the emission of the hotspot became more intensive. To understand these experimental observations, we proposed a scenario describing the evolution of the gold grains during the implosion process, and modeled it in a quasi-quantitative way to show how the gold grains affected the energy balance in the nuclear reaction region. By comparing the calculated neutron yield with the measured ones, it was inferred that about 15% of the gold had equilibrated in temperature and pressure with the surrounding plasmas, and contributed to the radiation loss, while the remaining gold stayed in a shock-heated condition.
