The experiments of wire array Z pinch were carried out on a double-pulse current generator “Qin-1” facility. The “Qin-1” facility has an independent prepulse current generator, which can produce a prepulse current of ~15 kA, 1kA/ns with a pulse width of 45 ns, to preheat the wire array. When driving the preheated aluminum wire array (8 wires, diameter of 1 cm, length of 1 cm), the main current is ~300 kA/300 ns under a charging voltage of ±35 kV. The time delay between the prepulse current and main current is adjustable. Wire arrays, including aluminum and tungsten wire array with 8 wires were tested on “Qin-1”. Laser Thomson scattering were setup to measure the imploding velocity and the electron temperature. Preheated by the prepulse current, both the aluminum wire array and the tungsten wire array with polyimide coating would be closely fully vaporized, and the traditional core-corona structures were suppressed. The imploding dynamics of the preheated wire array were quite different from the normal wire arrays. There was no ablation, no precursor plasma, and few trailing mass. And the imploding velocity of the preheated wire array was almost constant. The X-ray radiation power and emitting region of the preheated wire array were also measured using PCD detector and X-ray pinhole camera.
