1-D Numerical Simulation on Magnetic Driven Solid Liner Implosion Process

We report on a method for obtaining off-Hugoniot equation of state data on solid metals compressed to extreme pressure by a magnetically driven liner implosion on a high current pulsed power generator CQ-3-MMAF(Multi-Modules Assembly Facility, MMAF) with co-axial cable transmitting energy. In the experiment configuration the liner comprises inner and outer metal tubes. The inner tube is composed of a sample material (Cu) whose compressed state is to be inferred. The outer tube is composed of Al and serves as the current carrying anode. Another aluminum liner at larger radius serves as the cathode. A current pulse quasi-isentropically compresses the sample as it implodes. Photonic Doppler velocimetry measures the implosion velocity of the free (inner) surface of the sample material, and the explosion velocity of the cathode free (outer) surface. The ensemble of velocimetry measurements is used in conjunction with magnetohydrodynamic simulation (SSS-MHD) and mathematical optimization (OKICE) to obtain the equation of state of the sample. For the simulated experiment, we do two-step iteration. First, the load current is continuously corrected according to the velocity of the cathode outer surface, until the MHD calculation results of the cathode outer surface are highly consistent with the experimental result of the surface. Then, on the basis of the confirming load current, the sample material’s EOS data is corrected, to make the MHD calculation results of sample inner surface accord with the experiment. Upon completion of the iteration, the sample material’s precision EOS data will be obtained, with a fully self-consistent liner velocity history, and load current history.
