Cell wall and secreted antimicrobial compounds constitute the first line of plant defense against harmful pathogens. We reported here that Golgi-localized chloride transporter GLCT1 mutation caused the suppression of cell wall related genes and genes required for antimicrobial peptides and defense chemicals biosynthesis. Consistently, glct1 mutant plants were more susceptible to the virulent bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae (Pst) DC3000. In addition, the inhibition of GLCT1 transporter activity by specific inhibitor in wild-type plants also results in enhanced susceptibility to infection by Pst DC3000. These results reveal that GLCT1 functions as a positive regulator in plant pathogen resistance and provide new insight into the novel function of ion transporter in fortification of plant structural and chemical barriers.
