Plant epidermal cells are model cells for studying the differentiation and development of plant cells. The occurrences of trichomes and root hair cells are affected by multiple transcription factors and plant hormones. Although the molecular mechanism of plant hormone regulation of trichome and root hair development has made great progress, the detailed molecular mechanism is still not very clear. In recent years, our laboratory successfully cloned and identified six C2H2 transcription factors GIS, GIS2, GIS3, ZFP8, ZFP5 and ZFP6, which are the key regulators to control trichome and root hair differentiation through hormone signal in Arabidopsis. Our results showed that all these six genes act upstream of key regulatory complexes genes TTG1, GL1 and GL3. GIS gene to control the trichome initiation by integrating GA and cytokinin signal. Our recently study showed ZFP5 and GIS3 genes by directly targeting the expression of CPC, and RHD2, RHD4, respectively, to controls root hair initiation by integrating ethylene and cytokinin signal. These findings reveal that the phytohormone controls the initaiton of trichome and root hair cells mainly through GIS family genes.
