Preparation and Catalytic Activity Evaluation of Cu-Ce Oxide Nanoparticles for the Dehydration of Bio-glycerol into Acetol via Reactive Distillation

Cu-Ce oxide nanoparticles were successfully prepared with citric acid (CA)assisted sol-gel method. Techniques of TG/DTA, XRD, TEM and BET were employed tocharacterize the thermal decomposition behavior, crystal phase, microstructure and grain sizeof the as-synthesized materials. Results showed that after calcined at 600℃ for 3h, CAnitrate-metal precursors were transformed into ultrafine metal oxide particles with well crystallinity and in an average grain size of about 15nm. The catalytic activity of the asobtained samples for the dehydration of glycerol into acetol via reactive distillation was evaluated. Factors involving Cu/Ce mole ratio, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature,initial pH value of reactant solution and the durability of the as-obtained catalyst were further investigated in detail. An overall yield as high as 83.4% was achieved under the conditions of Cu/Ce mole ratio of 1:1, catalyst concentration of 0.06g.mL-1, reactant initial pH value of 8,and reaction temperature of 200℃.
