Abstract: This paper arises from the concern that the process of integrating English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in higher education in China is limited by unsystematic planning and theoretical confusion. The focus of the paper, therefore, is to address the issues that confront researchers and practitioners in applying ESP in higher education in China. Three successful ESP programs in Asia were analyzed and their implications for the development of ESP practice in China are discussed with reference to the current theories of ESP. The paper argues that universities in China should develop their own needs-based individualized ESP programs with structured curriculum and some flexibility.
