International communication can be achieved through language, but one can’t learn a language without learning its culture, and one of the main purposes of language education is to train the students’ critical thinking by intercultural education and communication, and ESP instruction in sports English education is not an exception. Traditional Chinese sports are not as influential as most western competitive sports and its influence and popularity is even weaker than some traditional sports from Asia, and this phenomenon may result from varied reasons, but one thing is certain that an internationally accepted traditional Chinese sports language system is not established yet, so while spreading traditional sports culture, coaches, traditional sports practioners are not able to use a powerful and well-accepted language to expound the profound philosophy, images, implicit ideas etc. in traditional Chinese sports. Meanwhile, we have to admit that traditional sports ESP textbook construction is far more than enough and lack of teaching materials and capable teaching staff have become the major barriers to satisfy the need of ESP teaching for traditional sports majors in colleges.
