Survey on Alignment of College English Courses and Requirements of Companies in Chongqing —— A Field of Electrical Engineering

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) fuels international cooperation. Against the backdrop, companies need more skilled talents with intercultural communication ability. This report aims to explore the requirements of electrical engineering companies in Chongqing regarding employees’ language abilities, problems of college English courses in terms of curriculum design, teaching design, assessment, etc., and tentative suggestions for the school and teachers. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed, including interviews with companies’ HR staff, with teachers of electrical engineering and college English courses, and graduate students. Questionnaire for employees, undergraduates and graduate students studying electrical engineering at Chongqing University respectively. The report will analyze the results mainly from three dimensions: 1. The current situation of English course curriculum design, teaching design, assessment, etc. 2. Students’ perceptions of outcomes and problems in English courses. 3. Current and future requirements of electrical engineering companies in terms of language competence. Combined with China's Standards of English Language Ability, the report attempts to investigate how to improve the efficacy of College English courses. This study has significant implications for needs-analysis research of companies, and college English teaching in the context of Chongqing and, to a greater context, China.
