The effectiveness of final course assignment will influence learning and teaching effect. A new trial of final project assignment for master candidates in their academic writing class at Tongji University is introduced – students’ group presentation based on their research of a target academic journal or conference which they plan to submit their papers to. A good understanding of the writing structure and its features of a journal or conference proceeding is of good importance to a successful submission. Students’ research covers general introduction to the journal or conference, different columns and the main topics, structure of the paper, writing moves of different parts of the paper, commonly-used sentence patterns and so on. For the first grade master candidates, a close combination of academic writing class assignment with their disciplinary research practice will arouse students’ great interest and enough enthusiasm to make efforts for the language course project. A group work will also help students piece their findings together to complete their recognition and enrich their paper writing corpora. The article shows that especially for the students who haven’t reached the level of independent subject paper writing, this type of assignment brings more feasibility.
