Abstract: CET (college English teaching) has been conducted in China for more than 30 years, during which CET has undergone two reforms to meet the requirements of social development. Now with the fast economic growth in China and the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative abroad, CET faces another reform both in teaching contents and teaching method. The paper explores the three future directions of CET reform proposed by China’s English education experts. The first is GEEMI (General Education with English Media Instruction), the second being EGP+ESP (English for General Purpose plus English for Specific Purpose), and the third being ESP (English for Specific Purpose). After analyzing the merits and faults of the three future directions of CET from three perspectives: objectives of college English teaching, the trend of English education and views of English education experts, the paper argues that the best choice for the future development of CET is ESP because it benefits students most in terms of their major study and future career development.
