Abstract:This article introduces the ESP instruction of non-English undergraduates based on the research project in China’s tertiary education. Four non-English undergraduates are chosen to form a research team to explore the linguistic features of aquaculture academic essays in English. The research team is jointly supervised by English teacher and discipline teacher in the whole study process. The discipline teacher assists the students to settle on five international aquaculture SCI journals in English. The language teacher recommends for the students the reference resources such as books on EST (English for science and technology) translation and writing. With the inspiration and guidance of both language teachers and the discipline teacher, the students come to figure out a number of parameters of the linguistic features of targeted academic essays which are collected to form a small corpus. The serial of students’ academic essay drafts are reviewed and guided by both teachers until it is successfully published on an academic journal. The future ESP instruction experiments of this kind call for the combination of non-English undergraduates and English majors into a research team.
