The case study describes the longwall coal seam 501 in Hard Coal Mine, where registered the loss of stability of longwall face coal and periodically occurring the roof falls. Authors of the paper have attempted to explain the analyzed situation based on measurements and observations of the longwall working in the in-situ conditions as well as numerical simulations. The calculations included a number of parameters such as the geometry of powered roof support in form of the canopy ratio, which has an influence on the load disturbance along the canopy.
Numerical simulations were realized based on the model of mass rock simulating the real mining and geological conditions at a depth of 600 meters in coal seam 501. Assumptions for the numerical model and parameters of its solution were described and obtained results were compared with the in-situ measurements.
Received conclusions of the paper can complement the engineering knowledge used at the stage of construction and selection of powered roof supports in order to improve both the safety of employed staff and the stability of longwall workings and to achieve better extraction.
